Chantry's Carnival Capers!
Music was definitely in the air on Sunday, 18/07/10, with "The Magic of the Musicals" being the theme for Andover's Carnival 2010. The costumed walkers were joined this year by 20 decorated floats and the combined procession wound its way through the town to the main event arena in Vigo Park, where the festivities continued on in to the night.
The Chantry Centre entered into the spirit of things with their "Shrek the Musical" themed float and whilst they did not end up amongst the top three, their float was extremely well received by the throngs of spectators lining the procession route with "Donkey" and "Princess Fiona" in particular being hailed constantly for a smile and a wave. The four costumed toy soldiers who walked along side the float were kept frantically busy handing out leaflets and sweets whilst collecting money for charity and, despite the high temperature, managed to do a magnificent job.
Members of the Management team, including security and cleaning staff, volunteered their time to build, decorate and man the float and, whilst it involved a lot of hard work, they all seemed to have a good time on the day. John Saunders' (Tech Services Co-ordinator) many talents were gainfully employed in the design and construction of the two-part float (a 43ft long articulated lorry) - half being the Ogre Swamp and Shrek tree-stump house and the other half being the Far Away Castle, complete with turrets and drawbridge. The character line up included Shrek, Princess Fiona, Cat, Donkey, Gingerbread Man, Dragon, Frog King, Fairy Godmother, Queen Lillian, Geppetto and 4 fairytale toy soldiers - just another normal day in shopping centre management!!

Get set for Busy Bee's
To celebrate the preservation of our wonderful bee population, The Chantry Centre will be a buzzing hive of activity on Wednesday 28 July between 11 and 3, so we are inviting all children to come and join in the fun.
We want all young eco warriors to join our craft team and make some eco bee houses.
Chantry Bear will be on hand to keep an eye on things, plus Willow the Wood Elf will be flying around making balloon bumble bees and flowers with biodegradable balloons for our crafty eco warriors.
Centre Manager Steve Cotney said, "It is never too soon to teach the next generation about how to be kind to the environment. If we can inspire, through fun and play, the children of today with good environmental practices, then maybe we can help to make a difference to our planet in the future".
The first 100 children to take part in the event will be given a special complimentary gift.

CHANTRY BEAR HELPS CHILDREN 'GRADUATE"
On Tuesday, 20 July, Chantry Bear - The Chantry Centre's larger than life teddy bear mascot, will be 'Guest of Honour' at the Longparish Playgroup's Graduation Ceremony.
Taking place at 2.15pm at the Longparish Village Hall, Chantry Bear will present children leaving the Playgroup for higher 'Primary School' education, with their "Graduation Scrolls". As with similar University Ceremonies, and giving the event all the pomp and circumstance it deserves, the children will be dressed in gowns and wear mortar boards.
"This is an important day in the lives of these children, as they leave the Playgroup to go onto Primary school," says Claire Nash, Longparish Playgroup. "The wearing of gowns and mortar boards and being presented with "Graduation Scrolls" by Chantry Bear will seem very 'grown up' to these youngsters."
"We are delighted that Chantry Bear can find time in his very busy schedule to attend this Graduation Ceremony at the Longparish Playgroup and to take part in this milestone event in the lives of these children," says Steve Cotney, Manager of The Chantry Centre, Andover. "Chantry Bear will not let his 'Guest of Honour" status go to his head, though - he will still be the loveable 'softy' that the children know and love!"

LOCAL WORKERS IN ANDOVER QUEUE UP TO STOP CHILD TRAFFICKING
On Thursday, 15 July, staff and supporters from The Body Shop at the Chantry Centre will queue up to stop the sex trafficking of children and young people and protect victims found in the UK.
They will give their handprints to the Stop Sex Trafficking of Children and Young People petition, a national petition spearheaded by The Body Shop and charity ECPAT UK, calling for the UK Government to put the safety and wellbeing of young victims of trafficking at the heart of their plans.
The petition is specifically calling on the Government to offer greater care and protection to child victims of trafficking by ensuring every child is provided with a guardian to look after them.
* A system of guardianship would mean that every child victim of trafficking would have someone with parental responsibility to care and support them.
* A guardian would protect each child and prevent them from facing further exploitation and harm from their traffickers.
* A guardian would ensure that every child victim of trafficking would receive the educational, medical, practical and legal support they need to help rebuild their lives.
The Body Shop Store Manager says "Children from over 50 countries are trafficked into the UK on a regular basis primarily for sexual exploitation, so it is happening on our very own doorstep! Even if they're lucky enough to escape their torment, identified trafficked children are often left without support and previous research has shown over half these children go missing from local authority care and are never found. Every identified child needs to be given a guardian and protector, someone to take parental responsibility for them and who is dedicated to making decisions on their behalf."
"We need your help to stop these vulnerable children from suffering any more. We are asking for the community of Andover to raise their hands to stop this injustice and sign our petition in their local store or by visiting our website www.thebodyshop.com/stop."
The campaign has already secured a raft of high level support from the UK and beyond with stars such as Twilight heartthrob Robert Pattinson, Sienna Miller, Rob Lowe, Matt Le Blanc, Joanna Lumley, Yoko Ono, Sir Ben Kingsley, Claudia Winkleman, Jo Wood, Martin McCutcheon, Craig David and Gordon Banks all submitting their handprints to the campaign. Please be part of this global effort to put an end to this terrible violation of children's rights.
How You Can Help?
1. Sign the petition calling on the UK Government to put in place, a system of guardianship to ensure these vulnerable children have someone dedicated to looking after their best interests, keeping them safe and ensuring no further harm comes to them by their traffickers so that they can start to rebuild their lives. Visit any The Body Shop store or go online to www.thebodyshop.com/stop.
2. Spread the word - join the Facebook group (www.facebook.com/thebodyshopuk), follow ECPATUK and TheBodyShopUK on twitter and change your profile picture/Twibbon to your own handprint/hand in the 'stop' position to show you've signed the petition and supported the campaign.
3. Buy the hand cream - all proceeds* from the sales of The Body Shop 'Soft Hands, Kind Hearts' hand cream (50ml/RRP: £3.50) goes to ECPAT to support their projects in this country.
The petition is part of a three year global campaign between The Body Shop and ECPAT to put an end to the trafficking of children and young people, guarantee their rights to be protected from exploitation and inspire long-term change to strengthen the protection offered to those children and young people. The Stop Sex Trafficking of Children and Young People Petition will be activated in some 66 countries around the World. The UK section will be delivered to the Prime Minister in 2011.
Did You Know?
Every year, an estimated 1.2 million children and young people are trafficked, become the victims of sexual exploitation and abuse.
Human trafficking is the third largest international crime (after illegal drugs and arms trafficking) believed to be worth billions of dollars a year and according to the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crimes, it is one of the fastest growing criminal activities in the world. It exists in every continent, region and country the world over from the richest to the poorest.
